* Other News: Copenhagen Sideshow

News Commenting on the comments of UK Energy and Climate Change Secretary Ed Miliband, and his suggestion that negotiators and ministers need to 'get their act together' in Copenhagen...

Friends of the Earth's Senior International Climate Campaigner, Asad Rehman, said: "Ed Miliband is right that negotiators and Ministers need to get their act together - but at the moment rich countries are treating the talks in Copenhagen like a sideshow. We urgently need to see the Government commit to new targets under the Kyoto Protocol - this should be the foundation of any agreement in Copenhagen, and rich countries should commit to slashing their emissions by at least 40 per cent by 2020 without carbon offsetting.

Mr Rehman added "In reiterating his support for a global carbon market, Ed Miliband is flirting with a double whammy of environmental and economic disaster - trading carbon is trading thin air. These proposals risk a speculative bubble similar to the sub- prime mortgage crisis. Ministers must instead commit more public money to enable developing countries to grow cleanly and adapt to the impacts of climate change which are already causing suffering to millions around the world.

Friends of the Earth is demanding that the Government changes its approach to climate change with its Demand Climate Change campaign.

The green campaign group is asking everyone to sign its strong and fair climate deal international petition to world leaders.
